Apply to obtain funding

Regular Doctoral Contracts

A certain number of doctoral contracts are awarded each year by the University of Lyon 1 to the CanBioS doctoral school. Additionally, donors to the Centre Léon Bérard provide funding for a doctoral scholarship (“Donations and Bequests”).

These contracts are distributed by ED CanBioS through a competitive process.

Targeted Doctoral Contracts

Targeted contracts are sometimes awarded by the Ministry for specific subjects, directed to teams within the school. Funding is provided directly by ED CanBioS to the relevant thesis supervisors.

Doctoral Contracts for Disability

The University of Lyon 1 issues a call for applications for doctoral contracts for candidates with disabilities. This concerns the allocation of new doctoral contracts or the extension of contracts nearing completion (up to an additional 12 months).

A single PDF file must be prepared by the candidate, containing the following elements, strictly in this order:
  • The application form
  • A curriculum vitae demonstrating the relevance of the candidate’s background to the thesis project
  • The thesis project (maximum 4 pages, excluding bibliography), including a three-year proposed timeline, relevance, feasibility, and a statement of motivation
  • A copy of the degree (Master’s or equivalent) enabling registration in a doctoral school
  • Copies of the corresponding transcripts
  • The notification of approval for recognition as a disabled worker from the Departmental House for Disabled Persons (MDPH) or the MDPH receipt (complete file), confirming that the request is admissible and under review
  • Applications must be sent to the doctoral school at EDCanBioS@lyon.unicancer.fr no later than May 10.
 

Applications for Funding for the 4th Year of the Thesis

For doctoral students in their 4th year, applications for additional funding (ARC, FRM, Ligue contre le cancer) must follow the following procedure:

Before submitting your application, you must email the doctoral school to obtain authorization via EDCanBioS@lyon.unicancer.fr.

⚠️ No application can be validated by funding organizations without prior authorization from the doctoral school.

Fondation pour la Recherche Médicale – FRM and FRM Béziat Award

The Fondation pour la Recherche Médicale organizes an annual call for projects to fund around thirty three-year doctoral contracts in France.

In 2026, FRM will award 1 contract to ED CanBioS. Candidates must send their FRM application dossier by email to EDCanBioS@lyon.unicancer.fr before March 4, 2026.

The Joint Doctoral Program of the University of Lyon and the China Scholarship Council (CSC)

FRFT-Doc Call for Applications

The call for applications “Support for Training in Fundamental and Translational Cancer Research: Doctorate in Science – FRFT-Doc” has been open for submissions on the EVA3 plateform since December 30, 2025.

Candidates can download the required document templates from the SD-Cancer-FRFT Doc - Inserm pro link, including:

  • The complete application must be prepared in accordance with the instructions provided in these documents.

Other Public or Private Funding

These can be obtained by research units, their teams, and/or their researchers and faculty (e.g., CIFRE, ANR, Ligue contre le cancer), independently of ministerial allocations.
