Scientific supervision of doctoral students
Thesis supervisor, co-supervisor and supervisor
The main supervisor is the thesis supervisor. They must be affiliated with one of CanBioS's research units and hold an HDR (Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches, or accreditation to supervise research). They may supervise a maximum of four doctoral students within the limit of 300%.
In the case of a thesis with a single thesis supervisor, the doctoral student may have a maximum of three supervisors, including the thesis supervisor.
In the case of a co-supervised thesis (supervised by two researchers from two different universities), the student may have several co-supervisors with HDR certification and a maximum of three supervisors. The minimum co-supervision rate per doctoral student is 30%.
The conditions for monitoring and supervising doctoral students are set out in the Doctoral Charter, signed by the doctoral student, the thesis supervisor and/or co-supervisors, and the director of the research unit. It defines the rights and duties of the various parties (doctoral student, thesis supervisor, director of the research unit, doctoral school, university).

Choice of Unit, thesis supervisor and thesis project
The thesis supervisor must have the Habilitation à Diriger les Recherches (HDR) qualification, be attached to a unit and/or team affiliated with the CanBioS doctoral school, and not have reached the limit of the supervision rate authorised at the CanBioS doctoral school.
The supervision rate authorised at ED CanBioS
A thesis supervisor (with HDR) may not have more than 4 full-time doctoral students (300% limit) under their supervision at any one time.
However, they may supervise a maximum of 4 doctoral students, up to a limit of 300%.
The minimum supervision rate per doctoral student is 30%.
A doctoral student may have a maximum of 4 supervisors, including the thesis supervisor.
Co-supervision:
The co-supervisor is not required to have HDR, but in this case, they may not appear on the thesis jury as a co-supervisor but as a guest.
Jointly supervised thesis:
In the case of a jointly supervised thesis (supervised by two researchers from two different universities), the student may have several research supervisors with HDR certification and a maximum of four supervisors.
Case of young teams/thesis supervisors without HDR certification:
However, there is a procedure for obtaining authorisation to supervise a thesis without HDR (apply for authorisation to supervise without HDR from the restricted committee of the UCBL Scientific Council).
In this case, the supervisor undertakes to defend their HDR before the end of the supervised thesis, otherwise their role as thesis supervisor will not be recognised at the defence.

Supervisory change
If you wish to change your supervisor, you can
- either wait for the individual monitoring committee meeting
- or do so throughout the year using this form and returning it to EDCanBioS@lyon.unicancer.fr
