Training modules

Doctoral training objectives

Doctoral education aims to provide doctoral students with theoretical and practical scientific knowledge directly related to their research project, while encouraging openness to other approaches and fields.

This flexibility is recognised by the public and private scientific communities as an essential element of professional integration.

Indeed, young doctoral graduates are required to apply their skills in fields of application that are broader than those strictly related to their thesis topic.

Number of hours and compulsory training courses

The doctoral programme comprises a minimum of 60 hours of training and must include the following compulsory courses:

1. Research ethics and scientific integrity – 15 hours (compulsory)

  • Mandatory for all doctoral students, with no exceptions.
  • These training courses are offered in MOOC format by ComUE Lyon–Saint-Étienne.
  • The corresponding training courses are available in the ComUE Lyon–Saint-Étienne training catalogue, accessible via the ADUM platform.

2. Cross-disciplinary skills – 45 hours

Doctoral students must complete their training with 45 hours of cross-disciplinary skills.

These skills enrich the doctoral programme with a variety of topics offered by the Doctoral School (ED). Students can choose between/from the following courses:
  • Student involvement:
    • either as a doctoral student representative (open to all students)
    • or as volunteers for l'IHOPe P'tits génies (only for CRCL or CLB students), an association that runs fun science workshops for children and teenagers hospitalised at IHOPe. Every Wednesday afternoon, 2 to 5 volunteers lead a 2-hour workshop on scientific or creative topics.
    • Participation in either of these activities can be credited for 40 hours to be entered in the COMUE ‘Student Engagement’ catalogue (for Les P'tits Génies, a minimum of 5 workshops per year = 10 hours), with a certificate provided by the association.
  • Internal training courses offered by ComUE Lyon–Saint-Étienne, registration is online via ADUM, with 131 courses offered in 2026.
  • Training courses offered by Lyon 1 University, accessible via the intranet: Human Resources → Staff Training.
  • Training courses offered by the University Library.
  • Training courses offered by URFIST Lyon, a training centre dedicated to researchers and doctoral students (on the Doua campus or online).
  • Training courses offered by VetAgroSup, including MOOC and specific trainings.

Specific training courses offered by ED CanBioS

ED CanBioS also offers specific training courses, including:

  • Training in experimental surgery, in partnership with VetAgroSup (4 places per year).
  • Training in environmental crises: organised by Labos 1.5 and eligible for a 10-hour credit based on a report written by the student on the day.
  • Sports activities: whether with the UDL or PROMESS, eligible for 10 hours (if a hobby) or 30 hours (if participating in competitions).
  • International summer schools, including:

External training courses and commitments not listed in the catalogue

External training courses chosen by the doctoral student and not listed in the ComUE Lyon–Saint-Étienne internal training catalogue may be taken into account.

In addition, involvement in associations or any activity parallel to the PhD may be recognised as training, subject to the submission of supporting documentation via the procedure provided for by the ComUE.

PhD students representing the ED CanBioS may be granted a 40-hour training exemption upon request to the ED management.

Conferences, symposiums and scientific life

  • Mandatory participation in at least one international conference, with an oral or poster presentation, is required during the thesis. Financial assistance from ED CanBioS may be requested on the basis of proof of participation, to be sent by email to  EDCanBioS@lyon.unicancer.fr.
  • Participation in CanBioS Day: each doctoral student must present their thesis work during the ED CanBioS welcome day, organised each year towards the end of November.

Complementary Teaching Activities (ACE)

Complementary Teaching Activities (ACE) can be used to validate up to 40 hours of training.

For validation, you must submit your service record, edited via GASEL, signed by yourself and by the management of your department.

Training F03 – Scientific project designer using animals

(Level 1 / function B)

Each year, ED CanBioS funds a limited number of places for training F03.

Registration is done via ADUM, by completing the following information on the registration form:

French courses

French courses are reserved for international doctoral students via the ULYS at University of Lyon 1.

Course validation

Courses listed in the ADUM catalogue

  • Submission of course completion certificates on ADUM and completion of questionnaires.
  • Validation is carried out by the course coordinator (listed on ADUM).
  • CanBioS is not involved in this validation process.
Courses not listed in the ADUM catalogue
  • Declaration via ADUM → ‘Declare a course not listed in the catalogue’.
  • If the certificate does not mention the number of hours, the detailed programme must be attached.
  • In the absence of a certificate (e.g. doctoral student representatives), a training validation form is required.
No training will be validated via SIGED, so it is strongly recommended that training courses be validated as the year progresses

Defence file

Training attendance certificates are required when submitting the defence file and must be included in the ADUM file.

They must specify the number of hours attended.
  • Failing this, a detailed training programme must be provided.
  • For training courses outside the University of Lyon, the programme must be submitted.
In the absence of these elements, the training course cannot be validated by the ED CanBioS management.
